Boko Haram burns military camp in Yobe town

Suspected members of Boko Haram sect yesterday attacked a military camp in Ngelzarma town of Yobe state, burning the military camp as well as a trailer load of grains meant for traders in the town.

According to Daily Trust, the sect members arrived the town at about 4pm and started shooting sporadically into the air. A security source who doesn't want to be named said that the attackers came in a very large number.

A resident of the town, Malam Hassan Aminu said residents in Ngelzarma had earleir informed the military men stationed in their area of an impending attack by the sect group as they got a hint that the sect members were sighted in a neighboring village.

"We reported to the security operatives but surprisingly they didn't take any action. The boys (insurgents) entered the town and set ablaze military camp, a trailer loaded with grains and some traders shops in the town. The military camp was burnt by the Boko Haram last year, they returned and burnt it again after being renovated by the state government. No action was taken to avoid the repeat" he said.

Transforming Opportunity for Women and Girls

article-thumbnail

Nigeria is tackling gender inequality head-on with innovative reforms and programs to provide women with greater economic mobility. The Federal Government is addressing unequal treatment in land, property and inheritance rights, which in turn, will provide women with better access to public services and enable more to start a business or manage a farm. This multi-pronged approach is gaining international recognition, and positioning Nigeria as a leader in gender equality among developing countries.

Expanding Economic Opportunity

Nigeria’s commitment to empowering women begins at the very top. President Jonathan has demonstrated a commitment to increasing the role of women in public policy and governance by appointing 13 women ministers (out of a total of 42) and four Special Advisors (out of 18) into his cabinet. Nearly a third of all political appointees in the federal government today are women – the highest percentage of any African country.
Nigeria's Ministers of Communication Technology and Finance discuss the steps being taken to close Nigeria's gender gap.
At the other end of the socio-economic ladder, the government’s Growing Girls and Women in Nigeria (G-WIN) program aims to improve economic and social opportunities for hard to reach women and girls throughout the country. About 54 million of Nigeria’s 80 million women live and work in rural areas, where they constitute 60% - 80% of the rural labor force. The G-WIN project is an unprecedented coordinated effort among the ministries of Water Resources,  Agriculture, Works, Health, and Communications. Some early results of the initiative include:
  • About 2 million women farmers have received mobile phones that allow them to access agricultural information to improve their farming methods. An e-wallet system allows the electronic transfer of money to purchase farm inputs like seeds and fertilizer.
  • Through the SmartWoman Nigeria project, a part of G-WIN, the Ministry of Communications Technology is providing daily information on life skills, money management, entrepreneurship, careers, healthcare, parenting, and legal issues (such as wills and land ownership) to women. Through the SmartGirl Nigeria program, the Ministry is setting up IT clubs in schools, identifying mentors to support girls and young women, and creating a help desk to support their interest in information technologies.
  • The Ministry of Health is increasing the pace of offering obstetric fistula surgery, a health condition that makes women incontinent after childbirth. Women who suffer from this condition are usually ostracized, and require specialized surgery. More surgeons have been trained and recruited for the program, and new treatment centers are being opened.
  • There is a focus on capacity building for rural women by training them in water management, providing water kiosks and sanitation facilities, and better maintaining rural roads to help them travel more easily.
G-WIN is receiving technical and capacity-building support from UK-based DfID, and additional support is being sought so the program can be scaled up to other ministries.

UN Women Recognizes Nigeria

testIn October, Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Communication Technology was one of seven global recipients of the UN Women’s Gender Equality Mainstreaming–Technology Award. The award recognizes outstanding achievements by organizations and individuals in the area of women’s empowerment through information and communications technologies (ICT).
“The Nigerian government recognizes ICTs as tools for empowering women and girls and has put in place policy frameworks to ensure that gender issues move from the sidelines of policy and decision making and become one of the key priorities,” said ITU and UN Women.

Investing in Education and Health

Of the estimated 10 million children in Nigeria who do not attend school, the majority are girls.
Girls who are educated are better able to contribute to future economic growth when they become adults. That is why the federal government has launched the Girls Education Project (GEP), a partnership formed with UNICEF to promote girls’ education. GEP focuses on interventions in health, water and sanitation, and income-generation activities to support girls’ in school. The project works in six Northern states where access to basic education for girls is limited. By the time the project ends in 2020, an expected 1 million more girls will have access to better quality education.
Studies show that educated women are more likely to use health services and have fewer and better-nourished children who are more likely to survive childhood illnesses. But education alone isn’t enough. There needs to be increased spending on healthcare for women and girls.
To promote a more holistic approach to addressing gender disparities in the health sector, in 2012 the Nigerian Government launched the Saving One Million Lives by 2015 Programme, which aims to expand access to essential primary healthcare services for women and children.
This initiative is focused on improving maternal, newborn and child health at thousands of primary healthcare clinics; expanding routine immunization coverage; preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV; scaling up access to essential medicines to marginalized groups; expanding the use of anti-malaria bed nets and medications; and improving child nutrition.
The program has gained the support of several multilateral and international partners, including the World Health Organization, World Bank, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, U.S. Agency for International Development, United Nations Children’s Fund and the United Nations Population Fund.

Amaechi has abandoned APC presidential campaign – Wike

image
Rivers State PDP governorship Candidate, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that the State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi abandoned the APC Presidential Campaign when it dawned on him that the PDP has overrun his party in the state.
He said that whether Amaechi spends the rest of the campaign period in Rivers State, the APC would be roundly defeated in all the 23 local government areas in the state.
A statement signed by his Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant (Media), noted that in his address at the PDP Ahoada East LGA Governorship rally during the week, Barrister Wike said: “Whether outgoing governor Amaechi sleeps in Rivers State till election, the APC will be roundly defeated in all local governments of the state.
“Amaechi abandoned his principal and embattled APC Presidential Candidate to run back to salvage his party. But, there is nothing Amaechi can do for his boy and the APC. It is PDP all the way. The people of Rivers State belong to PDP and no matter the amount of stolen funds Amaechi spends, PDP will win Rivers State”.
Speaking further, Barrister Wike assured the people of Ahoada East LGA that he would re-define development in the area by investing resources to improve their lives.
Wike promised to site a tertiary institution in the LGA and also revive the industrial district located in Ahoada East.
“We will develop Ahoada East LGA and ensure that the neglected people of the area feel the impact of government. We will site a new tertiary institution in the LGA.”
Barrister Wike lamented that the Ekpeye people had suffered neglect, noting that his administration would work with the Ekpeye people to develop the area.
He urged the people of the area vote PDP all the way.
Speaking, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudum Nwuche said that the entire people of Ahoada East had resolved to vote Barrister Wike to attract development to the area.
Member, representing Abua/Odual/Ahoada East Federal Constituency, Mrs Betty Apiafi called on the people of the area vote en-masse for President Jonathan, Barrister Wike and all PDP candidates.
Earlier, Barrister Wike was endorsed by the Ahoada East Traditional Council under the leadership of Eze Robinson O. Robinson.

Obasanjo finally dumps PDP, tears party’s card

The sore relationship between Nigeria’s former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on whose platform he served as president for eight years, has deteriorated with the ex-president reportedly tearing his PDP membership card in public and declaring that he no longer has anything to do with the ruling party. He did this on Monday morning at his hilltop presidential residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital,
Obasanjo tore his membership card before leaders of the PDP from the ward around his former residence in Ita Eko where he registered. They had come on a visit to express their concern with the former president’s recent utterances against the government of President Goodluck Jonathan and on what he said was the President’s role in the postponement of the general elections from February to March and April.
OBJ1
But, Obasanjo left his guests stupefied by tearing his PDP membership card before them, declaring that he would henceforth stay away from party politics and remain non-partisan.
This is coming on the heels of severe castigation he has received from PDP stalwarts and faithful for utterly criticizing President Goodluck Jonathan and hobnobbing with the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, and its presidential flag bearer, Muhammandu Buhari.OBJ
This action of the former president is one that would come as a surprise to many Nigerians as he has always prided himself as a card-carrying member of the PDP and rejected calls for him to quit the party since it was no longer convenient for him to condone the actions of its national leader, President Jonathan as well as other PDP big wigs.

16-year-old girl bathes lover with acid for cheating on her

Picture-338

For violating the oath they took, a 16-year-old girl, identified as Maureen (surname withheld) in Emede Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State at the weekend, allegedly bathed her boyfriend with acid.
Maureen accused her estranged boyfriend of cheating on her in the last three months of their relationship.
According to Leadership, the girl, now in the police net, upon interrogation by the police confessed to the crime, saying that her boyfriend violated the oath they took together.
It was reliably gathered that the victim was caught while making love to another girl right in a hotel within the community, a situation, when the suspect was informed about it, raced to the hotel where she attacked him with acid water.
DSP Celestina Kalu, police public relations officer in the state, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that the suspect claimed she was angered by the violation of their oath by the victim.
“I was determined to teach my boyfriend a lesson. So I went into my father’s car park where I picked an acid water to teach him a bitter lesson,” he said.
Sources said the acid water was allegedly poured on the victim’s penis, a situation that may render him impotent.

The Borno State government has declared today, Monday public holiday ahead of the visit of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)

buhari

The Borno State government has declared today, Monday public holiday ahead of the visit of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to the state.
Secretary to the state government, Alhaji Ahmed Jidda, announced this on Sunday in a statement in Maiduguri, the state capital.
According to Jidda, the public holiday would enable residents of the state to receive Buhari during his campaign rally.
The statement read, “The Borno State Government has declared Monday as a work-free day. The declaration is to enable the people of the state welcome the APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who will arrive Maiduguri on a campaign visit on Monday.
“Governor Kashim Shettima has enjoined all Borno residents to come out en mass and line up the streets to welcome the Peoples’ General.”
In another development, the National Christian Elders Forum on Sunday dissociated itself from the purported endorsement of Buhari by the Northern Christian Leaders Eagle-Eye Forum, led by one Pastor Aminchi Habu.
The Secretary of NCEF, Pastor ‘Bosun Emmanuel, in a statement issued in Abuja, advised Christians “to resist the temptation of putting personal interests above the interests of the Lord Jesus Christ, because such compromise has terrible eternal consequences.”
Emmanuel also called on politicians “to put the interest of the nation first in all forms of electioneering campaign and desist from acts that could be interpreted to imply desperate manipulation of the electorate for political power.”
His statement partly read, “It has come to the notice of the NCEF that an unaccredited group, claiming Northern Christians Leaders Eagle Eye-Forum, purportedly on Thursday February 12, 2015, in Abuja, adopted the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming elections, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
“The National Christian Elders Forum wishes to state clearly that the only Northern Elders Forum accredited and recognised by the Christians Association of Nigeria is the Northern States Christian Elders Forum.
“The Elders Forum hereby declares that neither CAN, NOSCEF nor the NCEF at any time supported or approved of the action of this unaccredited group. The National Christian Elders Forum wishes to admonish Christian leaders in Nigeria to resist the temptation of putting personal interests above the interests of the Lord Jesus Christ, because such compromise has terrible eternal consequences.
“The Elders Forum also advises politicians to put the interest of the nation first in all forms of electioneering campaign and desist from acts that could be interpreted to imply desperate manipulation of the electorate for political power”.

Bishop Oyedepo Denies making “Gates Of Hell” Statement.

The President of the Living Faith Church, otherwise known as Winners Chapel, Bishop David Olaniyi Oyedepo has denied that he made the infamous “gates of hell” statement.
He said he never threatened to open the gates of hell to anyone standing against President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term ambition.
Reacting to the allegation through the media department of the church, Bishop Oyedepo denied making such statement. He warned those spreading the rumour to be careful not to incur the wrath of God upon their lives.
The statement reads in full:
Our attention has been drawn to a statement credited to the President and founder of the Living Faith Church worldwide, also Known as Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, which has gone viral. He was reported to have made the statement last Sunday when the President of the federal republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan came to worship at Faith Tabernacle, which is the headquarters of the ministry.
The falsehood that is being spread around by mischief makers is that the Bishop, while praying for the President, said, “I will open the gates of hell to anyone who oppose you.” A little later, some others who in an attempt to “defend” the Bishop, came up with another quote purportedly said by Dr. Oyedepo, which is: “I will open the gates of hell to those who oppose the peace of this nation.”
Well, let’s set the records straight: The Press and Publicity Unit of the church, publishers of Faith Tabernacle News, was at the 3rd service and recorded (on tape), the President’s 6-minute speech, the congregational prayer for him and the Bishop’s blessing on the President.
Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who is also the presidential candidate of the ruling party – the PDP, came to the church as the President of this country, not as a candidate in the forthcoming elections. And Bishop Oyedepo prayed for him, as instructed in the Bible book of 1 Timothy 2:1-2, as the President of Nigeria not as a PDP standard-bearer.
HOW THE BISHOP AND THE CONGREGATION PRAYED FOR THE PRESIDENT
Even though we have published it on this platform, for those who are yet to read it, these were the exact words spoken by the Bishop while he was leading the congregational prayers for the President. As always, he took his bearing from the Word of God:
“1st Timothy 2:1-2: I exhort you therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers and intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men.” Then on the priority list is “For kings and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”
“I only had an idea of the President’s visit just yesterday. He wasn’t there last Friday when we had the One Night with The king. So we are going to be praying for our President. Let prayers and supplications and intercessions be made for all men; first of all, for kings, and for them that are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
And after that I will do what the priests are asked to do. It says “Speak to Aaron, that after this manner shall ye bless.” Proclaim blessings as a priest of God over our President, and the blessings will answer, in the name of Jesus Christ.
In Numbers 6:23-26, The Lord said to Moses and the children of Israel saying “On this wise shall ye bless the children of Israel saying: The Lord bless thee and keep thee; the Lord make His face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee; The Lord lift His countenance upon thee and give thee peace.”
When that blessing comes to stay, something happens. You see, the generation of the Old Testament knew the value of blessings; they would even cry for it. Every blessing proclaimed upon you today must answer on your life.
I like us to be on our feet and lift the President up to God. Whatever you desire to see God bring about in his life; bring about in our nation, begin to pray that prayer right now.
Father, release your grace upon the President to manage the demands of his office.
Release unusual grace in increasing dimensions, to manage the demands of his office.
Cause your face to shine upon him.
Lord, grant the desires of his heart.
Grant Nigeria peace.
Under him, grant Nigeria greater advancement.

T.B Joshua Reveals 2015 Prophecies {READ}

tb-joshua
At a candle light vigil service held to usher in the New Year 2015 at The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos, Nigerian Prophet T.B. Joshua declared 2015 to be ‘the year of good morning’. In the energetic service broadcast live on Christian television station Emmanuel TV, Joshua admonished congregants on the need to ‘worship God in Spirit’ in a sermon titled, ‘Discovering your real value’. “Christianity lies in the heart,” he told the multitude of worshippers, adding that merely observing religious ceremonies does not signify genuine Christianity. The crowds, including a huge array of foreign guests sporadically waving their national flags, thronged every available space within the sprawling church complex, even spilling onto the adjoining roads. “If you are expecting a New Year, you must be pure in heart,” he stressed, reminding the faithful of Jesus Christ’s words in Matthew 5:8. “If not, the troubled year of 2014 will continue in 2015,” he warned. Although Joshua uncharacteristically did not give his yearly prediction, his message conveyed that the troubles witnessed worldwide throughout 2014 would persist in 2015 but genuine Christians would grow stronger through them. “No matter what this coming year brings, if you are more of God, your trials are the soil in which your faith will flourish,” he enjoined the congregation. He stressed that the freedom the Bible speaks of in John 8:36 is spiritual not physical, insisting that a ‘free spirit,’ was needed for Christians to enjoy peace throughout 2015. “This liberation of your spirit is all you need to have the best year,” he stated.

Exposed!!! Pastor Adeboye Receives Salary From Presidency...Insider Reveals

Click for Full Image Size
'It is only God that can help me to change things. Pray for me now that I am the sitting president of your country. Pray for me not to deviate from the fear of God,'.
These were the words of the president, Jonathan Goodluck when he besieged the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway Church of the respected man of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye for special prayers.
There is no doubt that many believe that what transpired between the clergy man and the number one citizen of Nigeria definitely transcends prayer alone as we learnt they have a solid relationship that cannot shake.
A reason given on why Pastor Enoch Adeboye of Redeemed Christian Church of God has always be in support of President Goodluck Jonathan or has the habit of keeping mute on any national issue that concerns President Jonathan.
Sources close to the church have revealed to us that the relationship between Adeboye and Jonathan is more like a father and a very loved son; so it's difficult to see wrongs in a favoured son, said our source.
The very popular Pastor whose influence cuts across all boards of government especially in the southwest and beyond has over the years enjoyed good patronage from both state and federal governments using him to score political points in the process and win the support of his thousands of members scattered all over the country.
The story reaching us has it that, Pastor Adeboye has been made an unofficial spiritual leader of Nigeria from the Southwest and as such he has been placed on regular income. Though some may argue that the man of God is not a direct beneficiary of such fund but the fact still remains that it was actually because of the soft spoken pastor that such funds are made available. Another source in the church informed us that even if such should come from the presidency, it must be for the service of the church and not for the highly revered Adeboye.
Be it as it may, we gathered further that the regular income episode, we learnt was facilitated by a top Special Adviser to the President from the southwest who is also a member of the church . Though the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) which is the body that represents interest of Christians in the country also gets support for the organization from the government but Pastor Adeboye's income was according to information a special packaged that the federal government gives to some spiritual leaders perceived to be supporting them.
We gathered this money has been made regular since President Goodluck assumed office.
Meanwhile, it is also learnt that Pastor Adeboye pays all the pastors in the Redeemed fold. Our source who is also a worker in the vineyard of God told us that the pastor is a respecter of the labour law that stipulates 18,000 naira as minimum wage for workers.
The man of God has pegged his pastor's monthly salary to be N70,000. Every other month Pastor Adeboye pays out millions of naira as salaries to the pastors of Redeemed Church that has its tentacles spread all over the world.

FEMI ARIBISALA: WHY BUHARI WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA

Click for Full Image Size
On Friday, 23rd August, 1985, the military government of Major-General Muhammadu Buhari decided to place me under arrest. My crime was that I wrote, among others, an article entitled: “Counter-trading Nigeria's Future” in the National Concord, exposing the government's scam of diverting public funds into private coffers through barter-trade with Brazil. A man by the name of Benson Norman was sent from the State Security Services (SSS) to my office to get me. Not finding me, he left a note that I must present myself unfailingly at the SSS office at 15 Awolowo Road, Ikoyi Lagos the next Monday morning.
However, on Sunday, 25th August, 1985, Lateef Aminu came first thing in the morning to my house to inform me that the government of Buhari/Idiagbon had been overthrown. For this reason, I am fond of telling people that God brought about a change of government in Nigeria just because of me.
Coup-plotter
Under the Buhari/Idiagbon regime, once you ended up at 15 Awolowo Road, you may never be heard of again. Decree Number 2 of 1984 empowered Tunde Idiagbon to arrest and detain anybody indefinitely without trial and without legal reprieve. After Buhari was overthrown, Mohammadu Gambo opened the prison doors of 15 Awolowo Road on public television, revealing people in various stages of undress and malnutrition that had been kept in the dungeons without trial by Buhari's hound-dogs.
As self-imposed Head of State, Buhari had no regard for human rights. Immediately he seized power, he announced that he would “tamper with” the press. Soon, the infamous Decree Number 4 was promulgated which made even the publication of the truth a punishable offence. Under this cover, Buhari jailed innocent journalists, including Tunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor. He abolished civil liberties, promulgated retroactive decrees enabling him to kill Nigerians through jungle justice, proscribed civil society organizations and professional groups and exercised “absolute” power.
This same Buhari would now have us believe that he has gone through some metamorphosis and has become a democrat. I am sure you will forgive me if people like me don't believe him. Buhari is not, has never been, and will never be, a democrat. Only in Nigeria would a man with his track record, who came to power through a military coup that illegally overthrew a democratic government, now be acclaimed as a democrat. It is on record that Buhari's military regime is the only one in Nigeria's history that failed to promulgate a program for return to civilian rule.
Facts and fiction
So what exactly qualifies Bihari as a democrat today? Precious little! There is nothing democratic about forming and joining political parties just in order to be the presidential candidate. Little wonder then that Buhari's parties have a short shelf-life. Buhari would like to be Nigeria's head of state once again. He can no longer achieve this through the barrel of a gun. The only route now open to him is through the democratic process. That is the reason why he now conveniently fashions himself as a democrat. It is merely a means to an end; no more, no less.
Buhari's reputation as an anti-corruption crusader is also a myth. As head of state, he did not make any dent in Nigerian corruption. All we got was a cosmetic “war against indiscipline.” The counter-trade scam happened under his watch. Rather than deal with it, he sent his hound-dogs after nonentities like me who dared to expose it. That scam was no different, in scope and scale, from the petroleum subsidy and other corruption scandals that have since plagued Nigeria. The Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) that Buhari headed under Abacha was also a citadel of corruption. While Buhari himself might not have enriched himself, his cronies and those who worked under him did so handsomely.
On three different occasions, Buhari has run for the presidency. On three different occasions he has failed. That should really be enough. If, as seems likely, he were to run for the presidency a fourth time in 2015, there is no question that he would fail yet again. Try as he might again and again, Muhammadu Buhari can never be President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Buhari's sectarianism
There is a fundamental reason behind this. Buhari is a lousy politician. He is an unbending former military dictator and not a democratic consensus-builder. Like his new ally, Bola Tinubu, Buhari is a regional, sectional politician. Such politicians are practically impossible to package and market nationally in the ethnically-delicate Nigeria of today.
Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Nasir El'Rufai, one of those Northerners who deserve to be serious contenders for the presidency of Nigeria, observed that Buhari remains “perpetually unelectable” as a result of his “insensitivity to Nigeria's diversity and his parochial focus.” This is an elegant way of saying that politically, Buhari has an uncanny tendency to put his foot in his mouth. He talks before thinking of the political implications of his words. He shoots from the hip.
The strength of Obasanjo, which enabled him to capture the presidency on two different occasions, was that he was perceived as a broadminded politician, not overly partial to his people in the South-West. As a matter of fact, in his first election, his people did not want him. The strength of Goodluck Jonathan, which propelled him to win the presidency, was that he was able to string together a coalition that stretched both north and south of the Niger. The weakness of Buhari is that he is totally unacceptable to people outside his region.
Buhari is a Northern regional champion. As head of state in the 1980's, his government was unapologetically Northern. No attempt was made to balance the ticket at the top. It was the only regime in Nigeria's history headed by two Northerners. When he seized power, Buhari put Shagari, the Northern head of state he overthrew, under house arrest. But then he jailed Alex Ekwueme, the Southern vice-president. You may well ask what makes Shagari less culpable for the misdeeds of the Second Republic than his number-two man. The simple fact was that Buhari was Fulani as was Shagari; but Ekwueme was Igbo.
Impolitic words
At the height of the Sharia debate during the Obasanjo administration, Buhari declared that Muslims should vote only for fellow Muslims. This was politically suicidal for a man seeking national office. He became an advocate for implementation of Sharia all over Nigeria. He protested to the Oyo State governor, in the context of a dispute between Fulani herdsmen and indigenous farmers in the state, that “your people are killing my people.” This turned out to be unfounded and perhaps the reverse.
His threats during the campaign for the 2011 elections incited widespread violence in the North after he lost. His supporters went on a rampage; looting and killing; in spite of the fact that, by all accounts, the elections were adjudged the most free and fair in the history of Nigeria's current democratic experiment. By the time the mayhem had subsided, over 1000 people had been slaughtered in cold blood and some 65,000 displaced.
Forgetting that a statement made in Hausa would readily be translated into English, Buhari later declared unapologetically in a BBC interview: “If what happened in 2011 should again happen in 2015, by the grace of God, the dog and the baboon would all be soaked in blood.” These are the tokens of an irresponsible politician, whose ambitions for power supersede the national interest. Who then are the dogs and baboons that Buhari has in mind to soak in blood if and when he loses yet again come 2015? Are they his children or are they those of others?
With the Boko Haram insurgency in the north, Buhari played to the Northern gallery yet again, calling the Jonathan government “the biggest Boko Haram.” Wole Olaniyi was a fly in the wall at a meeting in Kano Government House designed to persuade PDP rebel governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to decamp to the APC. Assuming that only Northerners were present, Buhari declared the Boko Haram was a “strategic plan” by the government of Goodluck Jonathan to “destroy the North.” When Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states, Buhari still saw this with Northern goggles, insinuating that the President is waging war on the North.
President of the North
Without a doubt, Buhari has massive support in the North. Indeed, he is the most popular Northern politician in the North today. But that precisely remains his undoing at the centre. The more he has been identified as a Northern champion, the less attractive he has become as a national choice. Even in the North, his support base is limited to the Muslim population. He does not appeal to Northern Christians. Then there is the added factor of the opposition of his implacable opponents among the Northern elite. Men like Babangida and Atiku would rather die than allow Buhari get to Aso Rock.
One thing is certain, the South-South and the South-East will not vote for Buhari in 2015. Not only that; there are no buyers for Buhari's sectarian politics in the South-West. No matter what Tinubu might be telling him, the people of the South-West will not vote for Buhari in 2015. We already had the template in 2011, when Buhari tried to sell himself, first by balancing his ticket with a Yoruba man; and then by making sure the Yoruba man is a Christian; a pastor no less. But it just did not wash. It will not work in 2015.
The worst thing that can happen to Northern presidential aspirations in 2015 is for Buhari to be on the APC ballot. That is a sure guarantee that the North will not be providing the next president. Buhari would be a shoo-in in an election for president of Northern Nigeria. But in an election encompassing the entire country, the best he can envisage is to be a kingmaker. He cannot be king. The nearest Buhari will get to Aso Rock in 2015 is by attending the Council of State meetings.

Campaigns shouldn’t be about dead leaders –Buhari

Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)PRESIDENTIAL candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the February 14 election, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has said that campaigns should focus on national   issues and not on his state of health and dead Nigerian leaders.
Buhari’s advice came a day after some members of the Peoples Democratic Party raised doubts about his health status and after an advert by Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose warned Nigerians against voting for a 72-year-old man.
In the said advert, Fayose claimed that since three ex-leaders from the North-West had died in office, it would not be wise for Nigerians to vote for Buhari “because we are tired of state burials.”
Buhari, in a message on his official Twitter handle said, “How can his (President Goodluck Jonathan) campaign be talking about ex-dead leaders, jogging around the stadium and outright lies about health?”

Defence Headquarters Kicks Over CNN Interview With Soldiers

Defence Headquarters Kicks Over CNN Interview With Soldiers

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja has said that the Federal Government and the military authorities are committed to the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the country, adding that the blackmail by entrenched interests will not deter the military.
The DHQ disclosed this in two separate posts on its official website yesterday while reacting to what it described as “satanic” interview aired by the Cable News Network (CNN) on Thursday which it claimed was with a soldier involved in the ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
“The Federal Government and the mlitary leadership are concerned, committed and focused on the ongoing fight against terror. The orchestrated blackmail propaganda by entrenched interests as clearly illustrated by the ultra-biased CNN report will not deter the Military.
“If it is true that a Nigerian Soldier will willfully go against the rules by speaking without due authorization and misinform the foreign media, then it indicates how deeply committed and how far the interest of these enemies of Nigeria and humanity have gone in trying to undermine and destroy the Military.
“The motive of this satanic CNN report should be of concern to all patriots and Nigeria’s well wishers. We believe that appropriate security agencies will also work on the root of this blackmail against the nation. The fight is not for the Military alone,” DHQ said in the first post.
In the second post later in the day, the DHQ said it disowned the CNN report in absolute terms while it also described it as an ochestrated smear campaign to tarnish the image of the country’s armed forces.
“The Nigerian military reject in absolute terms the report that has been repeatedly aired on CNN which presented footages of interviews with individuals claiming to be Nigerian soldiers. This said report is certainly another orchestrated smear campaign targeted at the image and character of the Nigerian Armed Forces by some entrenched interests. This CNN interview and report is an unfortunate effort to promote blackmail. It smacks of an international conspiracy against Nigeria’s national security.
“A reputable medium is not expected to indulge in propagating concocted stories from persons or individuals whose identity remains questionable. Unfortunately, the report has been so zealously repeated with a view to enhancing its effect in terms of mischief. However, even if the blackmailers turned out to be Nigerian soldiers, the scenario only bespeak of the extent to which those who seek to bring the Nigerian military into disrepute can go in their desperation.
‘Without making any attempt to dignify an absolute mendacity, this Headquarters wishes to restate that the Federal Government and the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces are without doubt committed and focused on the ongoing fight against terror and is ensuring that both weapons and welfare are incrementally provided to the fighting force.
“Our soldiers know this and they are gallantly working round the clock to reverse the unfortunate gains of terrorists and improve the security situation in the affected areas. The orchestrated blackmail and propaganda against the leadership of the Nigerian military will certainly not stop us from stamping out terrorism in our country,” the DHQ said.

ABUTH Discredits Buhari Cancer Report

ABUTH Discredits Buhari Cancer Report

The Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), has discredited the purported report said to have emanated from the hospital to the effect that General Muhammadu Buhari is stricken with cancer, the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation has said.
A statement by the Directorate of Media and Publicity of the APC Campaign in Abuja on Saturday described as disdainful, distractive, mischievous, fake and fallacious the trending news report of an alleged prostate cancer condition of its presidential flag bearer, Buhari being credited to a source from the renowned
buharii
 Teaching Hospital.
“It (report of cancer) is untrue and condescending of its exponents. I have it on good authority that GMB has not visited the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in the last five years. So, how can anyone say that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer last October, barely three months ago?” Garba Shehu, Director, Media and Publicity of the Campaign said.
“This is the highest point of political distraction, malice and mischief. The report was not only fake but unfounded. I have spoken to impeccable sources at ABUTH all of whom deny the report and also claimed that the letterhead used was not their regular one, and that Dr. Bala Mohammed that purportedly approved the false Medical Report is not on the personnel list of that department,” he said.
Aside, Shehu said sources at ABUTH also disclosed that “Medical Report analysis only come from Laboratory Technologists and not Medical Doctors as handwritten in this particular case, stressing that General Buhari did not attend the hospital for cancer or any other ailment.”
Shehu also dismissed as figment of the imagination of “wicked and evil persons,” rumour that General Buhari may be travelling to the United States towards the end of this month for medical check up.
He restated its earlier statement on Friday that Buhari is as fit as a fiddle.
Shehu while dismissing the report as fabrications, however, said that “as a prominent leader of the opposition, many interests across the Globe want him (GMB) over for political and diplomatic consultations,” adding that the “invitation to the US may not be unconnected to this.”
